Why is ownership important?
Ownership provides reasons for the team members to perform at their best, guide them to focus on the output but not the input, and builds constructive competition.
It is widely known that motivations with only monetary value are not enough. A lot of people also care about other aspects such as creating value and recognition. Combining these with monetary value together can bring much stronger motivation to the team.
How to create a sense of ownership?
A basic for ownership is a clear task allocation and output(and input) measurement.
Only with something is owned by the team member, ownership can be sensed. It is usually not enough to only say that, but write that down clearly and have it transparent throughout the team.
An effective method to record that would be the RACI Chart.
What is a RACI Chart:
With the responsibility clear written down and display on the RACI Chart, the team members could know the ownership of themselves, and they would know that others know their ownership as well.
It is also wise to use a clear and transparent measurement of the output(and input) of each task. SMART criteria are good methods to set and display the measurement.
With the input and output measurements being set reasonably and within the control of the team members, it can stimulate the sense of ownership of the team members.
However, the measurement must be set carefully, and could truly show the work that is in control of the team members, otherwise, it would even frustrate the team and can have negative effects.
Holding Stand-up meetings could also help promote a sense of ownership.
Quick stand-up meetings which remind the team about the task ownership of each team member could be run. This could add as a reminder about the ownership every time the meeting is held.
Motivating your team via ownership can greatly increase both the quality and quantity of the output(and input), as well as improve the atmospheric well-being of the team.
Though the motivation must be carried out with sincerity and with consent from the team, otherwise it could only have minimal effects or even negative effects.
